Description
Back in 2009, I designed a loudspeaker based on the shape of a calabash. At the time, the enclosure was intended to be manufactured from ceramic, but the process simply wasn’t practical to pursue.
More than fifteen years later, advances in desktop 3D printing made it possible to revisit the original concept and finally turn it into a finished loudspeaker. The result is the Calabash Maker Edition—a compact 2-way standmount loudspeaker designed to explore what happens when the enclosure is allowed to follow the acoustics more naturally, rather than the limitations of traditional cabinet construction.
The goal wasn’t simply to create something that looks different, but to investigate whether modern manufacturing methods can be used to produce a loudspeaker that delivers performance well above what you would normally expect from affordable drivers. If you’ve ever been curious about loudspeaker design, acoustics, crossover development or what’s possible with 3D printing, this project is for you.
This is a high-performing and value loudspeaker, and building it will require access to a 3D printer that has a build volume of approximately 300x300x300mm.
When following this build plan, the end result should give you speakers that will have the following approximate specifications:
