Description

This Budget 2-Way Stereo Speaker set was designed around the HiVi B4N 4 inch woofer and an 1 inch Peerless Soft Dome tweeter in a rear ported bass reflex enclosure. The goal was to have a small budget speaker that performs well above its price in parts and material cost. The HiVi B4N has long been known as a small woofer that can provide a low bass response for a small woofer and small enclosure volume. The Peerless tweeter is also underated in price to performance value in my opinion, and makes the perfect match to the woofer in this design, resulting in a fairly simple crossover. We recommend that you use an amplifier that can handle a 6 to 8 Ohm load and is rated to produce at least 20 Watts per channel. When following this build plan, it can easily be built with everyday woodworking tools and by someone that does not have advanced woodworking skills. The construction follows butt joints. Finishing the MDF is up to you and you can follow my build exactly, or opt for a birch plywood or even solid wood enclosure, as long as you stick to the dimensions of the front baffle, the placement of the drivers on the baffle, and the same enclosure volume.

When following this build plan, the end result should give you speakers that will have the following approximate specifications:

Drive Units:

  • Tweeter: Peerless BC25TG15-04 Soft Dome Tweeter
  • Woofer: HiVi B4N 4 inch Mid-Woofer

Enclosure Description:

  • Bass Reflex box system

Frequency Response:

  • -3dB at 46Hz and ±3dB up to 20000Hz on reference axis

Sensitivity:

  • Approximately 85dB

Impedance:

  • 8 Ohm (Nominal)

Recommended Amplifier Power:

  • At least 20W per channel into 8 Ohms

Dimensions:

  • (W x H x D): 160 mm x 269 mm x 222 mm

For a lot less, you can build yourself a set of budget 2-way stand mount speakers that will blow everything else available off the shelf away. These speakers are as good with music as they will perform in a home theatre setup, and will perform equally well as near-field monitors. Soundstage and imaging is excellent and the vocals are very neutral with a clear high end that is detailed and will not become fatiguing over time. Put them on solid speaker stands and they will give you a solid bass response that is not boomy and sounds just right.
