Description

This budget 2-Way Stereo Transmission Line Floor Standing Speaker set was designed around HiVi drivers in a transmission line enclosure. The tweeter is from Peerless. The goal was to have a speaker that will perform well above average when paired to good equipment. The drivers might be budget, but they perform well above their price class. We recommend that you use an amplifier that can handle a 4 Ohm load and is rated to produce at least 30 Watts per channel. When following this build plan, it can be built with everyday woodworking tools and by someone that has intermediate woodworking skills. The construction follows butt joints. Finishing the MDF is up to you and you can follow my build exactly, or opt for a birch plywood or even solid wood enclosure, as long as you stick to the dimensions of the front baffle, the placement of the drivers on the baffle, and the same enclosure volume.

When following this build plan, the end result should give you speakers that will have the following approximate specifications:

Drive Units:

  • Tweeter: Peerless BC25TG15-04 Soft Dome Tweeter
  • Woofer: HiVi B4N 4 inch Mid-Woofer

Enclosure Description:

  • Transmission Line

Frequency Response:

  • -3dB at 46Hz and ±3dB up to 20000Hz on reference axis

Sensitivity:

  • Approximately 86dB

Impedance:

  • 4 Ohm (Nominal)

Recommended Amplifier Power:

  • At least 30W per channel into 4 Ohms

Dimensions:

  • (W x H x D): 125 mm x 900 mm x 230 mm

These speakers are as good with music as they will perform in a home theatre setup. Soundstage and imaging is excellent and the vocals are very neutral with a clear high end that is detailed and will not become fatiguing over time.
