Description

This high-end Full Range Stereo Speaker set was designed around the Markaudio CHR-70 4inch full range driver in a front slot ported bass reflex enclosure. The goal was to have a premium quality point source full range speaker with premium quality parts that will not require a correction or crossover circuit. The Markaudio drivers are surely very good and perform with low distortion and overall very flat frequency responses out of the box, and are perfect for this application. We recommend that you use an amplifier that can handle an 8 Ohm load and is rated to produce between 20 and 50 Watts per channel. When following this build plan, it can easily be built with everyday woodworking tools and by someone that does not have advanced woodworking skills. The construction follows butt joints. Finishing is up to you and you can follow my build exactly, opt for a veneer or painted finish, or even a solid wood enclosure, as long as you stick to the dimensions of the front baffle, the placement of the drivers on the baffle, and the same enclosure volume.

When following this build plan, the end result should give you speakers that will have the following approximate specifications:

Drive Unit:

  • Full Range Driver: Markaudio CHR-70

Enclosure Description:

  • Bass Reflex box system

Frequency Response:

  • -3dB at 47.5Hz and ±5dB up to 20000Hz on reference axis with peak at 13KHz

Sensitivity:

  • Approximately 85dB

Impedance:

  • 8 Ohm (Nominal)

Recommended Amplifier Power:

  • Approximately 20 to 50 Watts per channel into 8 Ohms

Dimensions:

  • (W x H x D): 164 mm x 354 mm x 250 mm

The speakers use no passive correction circuits or crossover parts and is pure full range. I include an option for an active Plate Amplifier for those wanting to set up desktop monitors. The plate amp can be tuned with Digital Signal Processing (DSP) to create a very flat response of +2dB across the 200 to 20000Hz frequency range.
